Austin’s Community First! Village provides affordable, permanent housing for individuals emerging from chronic homelessness. The micro home, designed for a resident named Jesse, incorporates the values of permanence, spaciousness, and relationships, as well as his ideas on how to be a good neighbor: a front door with a view of the common paths and a front porch to share with friends. The position and form of the structure maximize natural light and breezes at the screen porch, while providing a more protected feeling over the living spaces inside. Built on a $20,000 materials budget and without a kitchen or bath, the simple, efficient design is intended to be replicated several times throughout the site.
